American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) Announces its "Call for Abstracts" for the Region XIV Resident Trauma Papers Competition

ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to all general surgery residents, surgical specialty residents, and trauma fellows. Medical students are not eligible.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR PRESENTATION, ABSTRACTS SUBMITTED MAY HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY PRESENTED AT NATIONAL LEVEL BUT NOT PUBLISHED AS FULL PAPERS IN ANY PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL BEFORE MARCH 8, 2013.

The resident or the fellow who participate must be notified in the abstract as principal investigator. A scientific committee from the ACS-COT will select 6 abstracts for oral presentation during the XXV Panamerican Trauma Society Congress, Friday Nov 16th at Centro de Convenciones Plaza Mayor in Medellín-Colombia.

SCOPE

The abstracts should describe original research in trauma, critical care, or injury prevention. The topics can be categorized as either: basic laboratory research or clinical investigation.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

1. At the top of the first page, the full title of the abstract in capital letters.
2. Full name of all the authors, with academic degrees. The name of the resident who will present the paper must be underlined. The name of the principal author, a resident, cannot be changed.
3. At the bottom of the page, a footnote should be included to provide the principal author’s mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address. This contact information is very important for future communications.
4. The abstract should be no more than one page and provide adequate information and objective data to evaluate the abstract properly. It must be divided in sections: hypothesis, material and methods, description of the results, and conclusions.
5. Please, do not give any information to allow the identification of the institution where the study was performed.
6. The abstract should be submitted electronically, Arial 10, single-space, preferably as a Word document.
7. Please, send the abstracts to:mafejimenez2000@yahoo.es copying asocoltrauma@yahoo.es, no later than October 1st 2012 at 23h 59.

EVALUATION, AWARDS AND PRESENTATION OF PAPERS

Renato Poggetti, ACS- Región XIV Chief and María F.Jiménez from the COT Colombian Chapter will verify the accomplisment of the specifications of the abstracts and will send them to the judges of the ACS-COT for evaluation. The selection of the abstracts and the modality of the presentation will be notified by October 15th, 2012.

The 6 winning residents selected for oral presentation will not need to pay the XXV PTS Congress Registration. The final manuscript for the oral presentation in Medellín must be send as a final research project following scientific journal recommendations.

During the oral presentation in Medellín, the judges will consider the following aspects:

  • Objectives
  • Study design
  • Correct use of epidemiological tools
  • Presentation
  • Conclusions
  • Impact of the research

Oral presentations will take 10 min followed by 5 minutes of questions. The abstracts not elected for oral presentation will automatically be presented as poster. The winning resident of the oral presentation in Medellín will represent Region XIV at the Annual Meeting of the Committee on Trauma. The competition will pay for coach airfare to San Diego, CA March 21-23, 2013, and a three-day hotel stay.
